We dance on Tuesday afternoons 1:30 to 3:30 pm, upstairs at the Royal Canadian Legion (6726 Eustace Rd, opposite the Community Hall). We have the hall from 1:15 to 3:45, giving us 15 minutes to setup and clearup.
I'm trying to make this break even, so I am asking $5/session which should cover it. In addition there is a one time (per square dancer year) cost of $15 for those not already belonging to another club. This is for membership in the BC Square and Round Dance Federation and the Canadian Square and Round Dance Society which provides liability insurance. (Those who register in another club pay this fee there.)
No way! Come as you are. (Wear comfortable shoes though!)
No! You can come alone, come with a partner, come with a group!
In Square Dancing there are one or more “squares” of eight dancers. There is also someone, a “caller”, who tells the dancers what to do by issuing “calls”. These are individual moves that affect some or all of the dancers. The sequence of calls is not known to the dancers ahead of time -- they need to hear the call, remember what to do(!) and then do it. Some calls affect just some of the dancers in the square, some affect all. Some calls are very quick, some are long.
In Modern Square dancing the dancers learn individual calls, not a complete dance as was the case in Old Time or traditional Square Dancing.
For newcomers we will be roughly following the SSD program. Depending how things go we may do the whole Mainstream. For the experienced ones we will start reviewing the SSD and probably re-teach the remaining Mainstream calls.
Maybe Tuesday afteroons aren’t good for you, or maybe you’d like to dance more! There are several clubs around the Victoria Area, see the Lower Vancouver Island Western Square & Round Dance Association for details. The Nanaimo Square Dance people dance in Nanaimo, Ladysmith and Courtenay.
